BHS Cheerleaders Look Back on the Season

BY VIVYANA VERRETTE

Panther cheerleaders have been practicing three days a week since August. Learning thirty cheers and a grueling two minute competition routine hasn’t been easy.

Because their routine is harder than in previous years, team members have had to push themselves all season to prepare for competitions. Throughout, the cheerleaders have supported one another.

“I feel I have taken initiative as an upperclassman by being there for everyone, learning all cheers and memorizing the competition routine to help anyone who needs it,” BHS Junior Ariana St. Clair said. “I feel it is my responsibility as an upperclassman to be ready.”

Individual strength and stamina are important factors of a successful routine. But an essential element for this team sport is trust between athletes. If flyers do not trust their bases, then little can be accomplished.

BHS cheerleader Riley Burke has been flying since grade school. As she has picked up the many skills needed to perform at a competitive level, she has had to push out of her comfort zone.

“Doing new things can be scary and sometimes I’m not confident in myself,” Burke said. “Believe in yourself and put a lot of trust in the people holding you up in the air.”

Burke added that “having a good relationship with your coach” is another key factor for success. “She’s always helping me to overcome my fears.”

For seniors, this will be the last time competing in high school cheer competition.

“I am sad to know this is my last year being a high school cheerleader. I have been cheering since I was 8 years old and It has been my whole life,” Michaela Rafter, Cheerleading team captain, said.

“These past four years cheering at Beverly High School have been an amazing experience.”
