Rainstorm Ruins Student Art

BY ASHLEY RICHARDSON

This year’s Paint a Parking Spot fundraiser was supposed to be a fun filled day when BHS students get a chance to show their creative side.  The weather had other plans.

Students gathered in the BHS parking lot to paint their spots and raise money for the Senior class on October 29.

The event started according to plan. Music blasted. A leaf blower whirred clean the parking spots. A few dozen seniors got to work and began putting paint to pavement. Some underclassmen had tagged along to help out.

Rain had been forecasted, but it wasn’t supposed to start until later. Then, a flash storm washed hours of work quite literally down the drain.

BHS Senior Maddie Bowen had been painting a Finding Nemo themed spot with two of her friends as the downpour began hit.

“After the rain started, I didn’t really know what to do as the paint was dripping down my spot, ”Bowen said. “I tried to get a cardboard box to hold the rainwater, but it didn’t work.”

Like Bowen, others also tried, and failed to save their expensive spots.

“I wish I had started earlier, so the rain wouldn’t have washed it away” painter Jenn Pelletier says referring to her smiley face decorated spot which looks, well, a little sad.

Despite the rainstorm, for some attendees, the day was nevertheless an enjoyable experience they shared with friends.

Seniors interviewed by Panther News offered some advice to underclassmen who may be planning to paint their own spots in the next few years.

“Buy the cheapest supplies you can get, it’s expensive and know what you’re going to paint because it’s always better to have a plan,” Bowen said.

“Buy a lot of paint, because I didn’t have enough,” Pelletier added. “Also, use bright colors, those show up on the pavement better.”

BHS Junior Lucy Stevens, who helped out senior friends, reflected on the apparent lesson.

“I hope to waste less time planning and just get started so that events, like rain, would have less unfortunate outcomes,” Stevens said.

Even though her senior Paint a Parking Spot fundraiser is nearly a year away, Stevens has begun planning.

“I’m looking forward to next year,” Stevens said. “My spot will be the best in the lot.”
