A Season to Remember

BY OLIVIA GIELLO

Julia Kaszynski, 17, is one of two captain-elects for the Beverly High School Varsity Gymnastics team’s upcoming winter season.

Seemingly endless amounts of training and practice go into preparing for competitive gymnastics meets. Perfectly executed routines only come with years of strength, technique, and skill training. Captain Kaszynski ‘23 has seen it all.

A standout athlete, Kaszynski has been a varsity athlete for the Panthers since she was in eighth grade. She also competes in gymnastics at a local gymnastics club, Iron Rail Gymnastics Academy.

Panther News spoke with Kaszynski as the Beverly Gymnastics team gears up for this season.

How long have you done gymnastics?

I started gymnastics when I was two years old and joined my current club team [at IRGA] when I was 8.

What was your favorite part of being a competitive gymnast as a child and into your teenage years?

My favorite part of being a competitive gymnast throughout my life has been watching my improvement and seeing my scores increase, as well as making life-long friendships within the gym. I have been able to carry these friendships throughout my life.

What are you most excited about for your upcoming season as a captain?

For the upcoming high school season as a captain, I am most excited to meet the new team members and see what everyone is able to accomplish throughout the season.

Is there a new skill or specific event you are most excited about competing in this year?

This season I hope to be able to get down a solid vault and compete a tsukahara. This is a vault that includes a round-off onto the vaulting table with a back tuck-off.

How are you preparing for this season?

I am preparing for this season by working hard at club practices and getting my routines down.

What is your favorite event to compete in and why?

My favorite event to compete is the uneven bars because I can focus more and present less, unlike beam and floor where there are also dance components as well as skills. I also feel most confident on bars.

Will you still be doing gymnastics after the high school season?

After this high school season, I plan to finish the spring AAU season at my club gym and hopefully compete in nationals.

What are your plans for the future and after high school?

After high school, I plan to go to college for nursing and I am currently considering joining a club gymnastics team in college.
