Q&A: Grace Earl, BHS Senior Class Presidential Candidate

BY PANTHER NEWS

Grace Earl, BHS scholar and sailing phenom, has been the class president of her grade since freshman year. Once again, Earl will stand in this year’s election for class president. Panther News caught up to this political veteran to discuss student government and her campaign for Senior President.

Panther News: What motivated you to run for office? What did you hope to change/preserve at school?

Grace: Freshman year I decided to run for Class president somewhat on a whim – Some friends and I ran for positions because it sounded like a great way to get involved in the school community.  It ended up being one of the best ways to spend the past 3 years and gave me the opportunity to talk with more of my peers.

Panther News: What are your goals for this year?

Grace: For the upcoming year, the class officers are all hoping to organize more senior week events.  The school spirit at BHS can sometimes be in short supply, but out of everyone, it is the seniors who set the tone for the rest of the school.  With this, we want to encourage the class to join in on spirit/senior week events, as well as any senior-specific events that are offered in our final weeks of school.

Panther News: You’ve been the class president every year of your time in HS. What decisions or approach to the job  have led to your success.

Grace: I try my best to stay organized and listen to the class as a whole on what THEY want to see for class activities.  We have definitely adjusted the types of fundraisers we organize since freshman year, and I think this communication with the class has helped us to succeed.

Panther News: Could you speak about the working relationship between student government members? Is it friendly? Contentious? Something else?

Grace: The 4 class officers – Kelly Flannery, Alexa Faletra, Elliot Lund, and myself – truly have a great relationship which has definitely contributed to our success.  We are always texting each other with ideas, and everyone carries their weight when we are planning events.  It is a very friendly environment where ideas can bounce around and collaboration can occur.
