Q&A: BHS Artist Sketches Out Future Career

BY SAMANTHA HALL

For many BHS seniors it’s becoming closer and closer to the time they’re supposed to decide what to do with their future.  For Brent Short ‘23, the decision was made years ago.

“I have always wanted to create a comic of my own,” Brent said.

The influence started early on. Brent’s older brothers, artists themselves, encouraged Brent to start drawing and thinking about art from a young age.

“Video game art and Deadpool comics were the start to my creativity in a way,” Brent said.

Brent took particular inspiration from the variety of styles and artistic approaches in these mediums. These influences are evident in his art even now.

As the end of high school fast approaches, Brent is considering how to go about turning his skill into a career in a highly competitive field.

“With so many creators and creations, it can be hard to find the right starting ground.” explains Brent.

Undeterred, Brent plans to go onto higher education to study Illustration, with the goal to “really take time to develop my own characters and stories for my own comics.”

And with todays’ high cost of living, making a living through a creative career can be a significant challenge.

“Monetizing and selling things of your own while balancing other things in the outside world can be difficult,” Brent said. “It can get even harder trying to get a fanbase.”

Brent Short seems sure of his place in the future and is determined to carve the path out to get there however he can.

“For me personally, there isn’t a [specific] story I want to tell with my art.” explained Brent. “It’s more just to please the reader and keep them interested in my work.”
